Place the first shingle end flush to the edge of the roof.
How to shingle a roof up to a wall.
A couple of weeks ago we published a two part series showing how a local roofing contractor shingled a roof with architectural shingles.
If you hit a stack vent or chimney interlace the shingles with the flashing to allow water to run down the roof.
Roof planes that butt against vertical walls at the end of the shingle course are protected by metal step flashing at least 125 mm high and 125 mm wide 5 high and 5 wide.
The stair step method tends to spread and mix the bundles better.
Tape over the cut in the housewrap with housewrap tape.
Keep this up until you reach the other end of the peak.
Use sticky back ice and water shield as underlayment where ice dams or leaf and twig dams are likely to build up and at valleys and where the roof ends at a wall wide metal flashing may also be used there.
When you reach the peak either bring the ridge edges together with a ridge capping layer or cut regular shingles into 3 tabbed equal pieces and bend them so they fit on the roof peak.
Continue laying your shingles horizontally up the roof.
If the adjacent shingles come from other bundles that are a slightly different color the roof may look patchy even striped.
When applying the new shingles each shingle course will be covered by a step flashing.
Now install the kickout flashing and step flashings up the roof as needed.
Proper roof wall flashing example.
To install the roof wall flashing above the builder bent the top edge of the flashing into a 90 degree lip about 2 cm in width.
Most simply use a nominal 6 piece of lumber.
The wall leg of the kickout should be applied over the housewrap cut a 2 ft square piece of housewrap and tuck one edge into the horizontal cut the same one the first piece of housewrap was slipped into and up under the housewrap on the wall by at least 5 in.
The installer tacked a row of asphalt shingles to the wall caulked their top edge and hoped for the best.
Install the next shingle approximately 2 3 past the seal strip of the first shingle.
Use tin caps under staples if the roof may be exposed to wind before shingles are to be applied.
I created this video to help those do it yourselfers wanting to take on your own roof on how to install step flashing against a wall that will be getting si.
The roof flashing is then placed up behind this through the wall z bar flashing on the outside of the vertical blocking backing material.
Nail each side of the shingle to each side of the ridge just below the shingles self sealing strip.
Your last shingle is an exposed shingle.
